Happy Administrative Professionals Day from Oil & Gas Admins International

Today we celebrate the office heroes.  The backbone of oil and gas companies.  The ones that work tirelessly and sometimes thanklessly behind the scenes.  The Administrative Professional.

Oil & Gas Admins International was formed to celebrate those heroes.  In 2013 after researching and finding that there were no trade organizations or associations in the oil and gas industry that focused specifically on the career and personal development of administrative and support professionals (and after the initial shock), Oil & Gas Admins International was established to provide those opportunities.

The oil and gas industry had long recognized the importance of developing their employees and providing places to network, share best practices and lessons learned and to create industry standards through organizations like SPE (established in 1957) for Petroleum Engineers, AAPG (established in 1917) and SEG (established in 1930) for Geologists and Geophysicists, and IADC (established in 1962) for Drilling and Completion Engineers, but had missed an opportunity to create those same avenues for support professionals, thus O&GA was formed!

O&GA works to expose oil and gas administrative and support professionals to industry information and technologies to develop the necessary skills required for career advancement and to most effectively support the global and diverse oil and gas industry. The O&GA Professional Certification ensures oil and gas administrative professionals produce outstanding results for industry corporations and professionals.

The annual Oil & Gas Admins International Conference and Vendor Exhibition offers information, connections, inspiration and motivation to help oil and gas professionals succeed and excel in a challenging and demanding industry. It is a one-day conference scheduled to be held Thursday, June 15, 2017 from 7:30 AM until 5:30 PM with a vendor exhibition during lunch from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM.

The world operates in no small part thanks to the oil and gas industry.  No oil and gas company works well without a good foundation and a strong and solid support system. Today, we recognize that support system.  The unsung heroes.  The Oil & Gas Administrative and Support Professionals.

O&GA International Leader Spotlight – Mary Alaniz, Lead Admin Career Path & Mentoring Ambassador

Mary Alaniz is the Executive Assistant to the President and CEO of Surface in GE Oil & Gas.

Mary’s background encompasses Upstream, Downstream and Midstream Oil & Gas C-level Executive support. She began her Oil & Gas career in 2005 and has since worked for companies such as Tejas Power Corporation, VetcoGray, ConocoPhillips, BP and GE Oil & Gas.

Throughout her career, Mary has seen the evolution of the Oil & Gas business transition with spinoffs, acquisitions, mergers and Newco startups. Her ability to adapt to change has been instrumental in her professional growth from receptionist to Senior Executive Assistant to a company Officer.

Mary has made a successful career in the administrative field and advocates the importance and value of Administrative Assistants in the workplace as well as the need for mentoring and continuing education to administrative employees.

She holds an Associates in Secretarial Science from Texas Southmost College and has earned both the CPS (Certified Professional Secretary and CAP-OM (Certified Administrative Professional- Organizational Management) accreditations and most recently the OGAPC (Oil &Gas Admins Professional Certification).

Mary and her husband, J.D. live in Katy, TX with their two sons. She is an avid soccer fanatic and enjoys volunteering at the local high school’s booster club for the National Honor Society and the Fine Arts Theater Company.

TopGolf in Spring Hosted O&GA International’s North Houston Networking Event and it was a BLAST!

TopGolf hosted O&GA’s networking event Tuesday, April 4th and it was a BLAST!  Attendees filled their bellies with delicious chicken and beef fajitas with all the trimmings, nachos, donut holes and drinks.  They had the chance to work off a few pounds and have a lot of fun by hitting some golf balls in the golf bays reserved for the event.  

Marc Williams, TopGolf’s Event Sales Manager, gave a great overview of TopGolf’s fantastic meeting and event options.  Patty Inzana, O&GA’s Lead Ambassador for ExxonMobil, echoed Marc’s overview by sharing that when she’s partnered with TopGolf, their services were nothing short of spectacular!

It was a cool windy beautiful night and The Whitehall Houston pulled out all the stops for the O&GA International networking event! Delicious flautas, brisket sliders, quesadillas, and nachos all made in house! Top that off with live music and great networking with lots of new faces. It was truly a wonderful event!

O&GA International Leader Spotlight – Sarah Payne, Corporate Ambassador At-Large

I have been in the Oil and Gas Industry over 15 years. I have worked from Chemical Plants as a fire watch and worked my way into business administrative.

Born and raised in Louisiana (a country girl) and moving to Port Arthur, Tx after getting married. I was a house wife and after 11 years of marriage, and went through life changes, I went to school in the nursing field in 1992, which was a great accomplishment for me.but a few years later there was another life change.

I moved to Houston 2005, and got back into the Oil and Gas Industry in 2007. Since being back in the industry, I have completed many certified programs and training, such as Geology, Completion/Production certification. Concur AER training, SAP/AP windows, Business Management, Sourcing and Supplier Relations, Bonded and Certified Notary, just to name a few.

My most proud accomplishments are my children and their children.

Over the past years I have served on different in different organizations and holding several positions. Organizations including:

  • Desk and Derrick, President, Vice President
  • MW Oil and Gas, member
  • ISA, International Society of Automation. member and volunteer for different events
  • Oil and Gas Admins, member

I am so privileged to have served in these organizations, and look forward to many events, conference and networking to empower the education, skills and training of others.

O&GA International Leader Spotlight – Shawna Lamborn, Lead Ambassador for Baker Hughes

Shawna Lamborn has a wide range of administrative experience supporting oil & gas, legal, insurance, social service, advertising sales, and software development companies during her 15 year career in Canada and USA. In 2012 Shawna joined Baker Hughes where she is currently an executive assistant for the North America leadership team, leveraging her lean six sigma training for space planning of the 700+ offices at her Houston office location. Early in her career, she earned diplomas for Business and Computer Software from colleges in Alberta, Canada and The Woodlands, TX. As a steering group committee member for the Baker Hughes Women’s Resource Group, Shawna recognized the value and vision of Oil & Gas Admins International, and became a member at their inaugural conference in May, 2014 and has been an active participant ever since.

Shawna worked for Interfaith of The Woodlands, a non-profit social service agency, from 2002 to 2010 to enrich and support the community where she and her family lived. Starting part-time as a receptionist, she quickly advanced to the advertising sales position for the award-winning Woodlands Directory, which raised the majority of the funding of Interfaith through yellow page ad sales. During her career at Interfaith, Shawna’s performance was recognized with the Executive Director’s Excellence Achievement award for professional attitude and customer service in 2005, 2007 & 2009.

Shawna’s motivation and organization skills enabled the new Houston High School Inline Hockey league to start in 2001, where she presided as an elected board executive and president from 2004-2007 for 24 teams. An avid fan of hockey, Shawna began playing the game herself in 2005, with her team soon winning 5 consecutive city championships, currently semi-retired.


O&GA International Leader Spotlight – Michelle Kennedy, Lead Ambassador for Statoil

Michelle joined Hydro in May, 2006 as a Legal/Executive Assistant in Houston, TX. She provided assistance to Hydro’s General Counsel and Chief Financial Officer. Michelle became Executive Assistant to the President of Hydro in December, 2006.

After Hydro & Statoil merger in October, 2007, Michelle became Executive Assistant to Statoil’s President, Oivind Reinertsen. During her tenure at Statoil, she has provided executive assistance to SVP Business Development, VP Strategy and VP Communication. She is currently the Executive Personal Assistant to SVP Offshore, VP Business Development, Houston Admin Network Coordinator and Texans Suite administrator.

Prior to joining Statoil, Michelle worked as an executive assistant in the legal industry spanning more than 20 years for such law firms at Porter & Hedges, Thompson & Knight and Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Her experience includes event planning, project management, business development, corporate, litigation and probate.

Michelle is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and earned her B.S. in Business Administration & Government from Texas Woman’s University. She also received her Tradeshow Marketer Certification from Northern Illinois University. In her spare time, she enjoys event planning, traveling, volunteering, working with teens and serving her community. She has two adult children.

The most recent interesting tidbit about me is that I returned to college after being away for 35 years and on December 14, 2016 I received by BS from Texas Women’s University. I love planning events and mentoring high school students.

In my spare time I like to work on my website which ties into my passion for event coordination.
