Someone you know could be experiencing a mental illness or crisis.\u00a0 Can you help them??<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

You are more likely to encounter someone \u2013 friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor, or member of the community \u2013 in an emotional or mental health crisis than someone having a heart attack.\u00a0 Mental Health First Aid teaches a 5-step action plan to offer initial help to people with the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in a crisis and connect them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self-help care.<\/span><\/p>\n

MHFA<\/strong> is an evidence-based program that is being used internationally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n
• Identify mental health crises and concerns<\/span><\/li>\n
• Provide help, comfort, and support to promote and enhance recovery<\/span><\/li>\n
• Preserve life when a person may be a danger to self or others<\/span><\/li>\n
• Identify signs & symptoms of common mental health disorders,<\/span><\/li>\n
• Build awareness of community resources for mental health<\/span><\/li>\n
• Understand stigma associated with mental illness and its effects<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  ALGEE, <\/strong>the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan<\/span><\/p>\n

  A<\/strong>ssess for risk of suicide or harm<\/span><\/p>\n

  L<\/strong>isten non-judgmentally<\/span><\/p>\n

  G<\/strong>ive reassurance and information<\/span><\/p>\n

  E<\/strong>ncourage appropriate professional help<\/span><\/p>\n

  E<\/strong>ncourage self-help and other support strategies<\/span><\/p>\n

  LENGTH<\/strong>: 2 hours.<\/span><\/p>\n

  These workshops are underwritten by Kaiser Permanente, the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund, The Meadows Foundation, and the Community Foundation of Northern Colorado. Mental Health America of Greater Houston provides the outreach and certified trainers as we help rebuild hope and the well-being of people throughout the region.<\/span><\/p>\n
