<\/a><\/p>\n<\/a>For some reason I always picture success as a picturesque snapshot from paradise. The reality is that success often looks like something from a tragic drama. Trying circumstances just might be the beginning of our greatest opportunities for success.<\/p>\n
In the mid 1990\u2019s , I was faced with just such a opportunity. I met a woman in the apartment management business. She was a competitor, all 50+ jaded years of her life, and after a brief conversation, I realized this was the \u201cghost of future career” for me, IF I didn\u2019t change my career path. After about 6 months of muddling about, I came up with a decision and haven’t looked back since.<\/p>\n

- I like running things, putting chaos into order, tackling insurmountable challenges, and getting and keeping folks on point.\u00a0 I like working with people. Planning events, arranging travel, and doing it all over and over again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- What do\u00a0you do best?\n
- \n
- For me, taking care of people\u2019s lives, careers, meetings and all things administrative.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned to distinguish between my profession and co-dependency\u2026there is a difference. Keeping it healthy is my\u00a0\u201cmotto\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- What skills are you willing to further develop?\n

- There is always room for improvement, and I just want to be the best I can be.\u00a0 Accounting, bookkeeping, not so much.\u00a0 Industry knowledge? Certifications? Current skillset? Bring it ON!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- What are your least favorite abilities\n

- Let me explain:\u00a0 Due to my key abilities such as attention to detail, nearly compulsive level determination that all things balance out and demonstrated responsible ethics and behaviors; many folks recommended accounting and bookkeeping jobs.\u00a0 However, I know myself! When I get tired, I transpose numbers, and while I was good at keeping records, I get bored with lines and rows and columns\u2026not a good fit for a lifetime career.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Where\u2019s the market for your abilities?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

- Different location – different markets\n

- Baton Rouge, Louisiana is a middle market and when there are downturns, often middle market areas are where the\u00a0\u201clayoff axe\u201d lands.\u00a0 I learned this after three layoffs in a three year span.\u00a0 Houston was the closest big city, and I headed west!<\/li>\n
- Houston: As I began my job search, I was asked repeatedly,\u00a0\u201cIn what area are you looking for administrative work?\u201d\u00a0 I would say something like,\u00a0\u201cDowntown, Humble area or even, I will travel anywhere I just need a job\u201d, and frankly was puzzled by the puzzled look on each and every recruiter\u2019s face.\u00a0 I finally gathered the courage to ask,\u00a0\u201cWhat exactly do you mean?\u201d\u00a0 What they really wanted to know? What is your administrative specialty: Oil &Gas, Medical, or Legal.\u00a0 I was astounded. I was NONE of those things…I was an administrative assistant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- The kind recruiter talked a bit further, and began red marking\u00a0my resume\u2019, which I promptly revamped, and at her guidance targeted the most lucrative field, Oil & Gas.\u00a0 She sent me on a\u00a0\u201ctemporary contract\u201d assignment to ExxonMobil, I worked hard and the rest is my career history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- Speak Up (but be sure to go through the proper channels when possible)\n

- I hit the ground running, moved up quickly and\u00a0after several promotions (and role changes), I landed a long assignment\u00a0of three-five years. After the seventh year, I realized I was\u00a0a running on burnout, feeling trapped, bored, frustrated and needed a change.\u00a0 I was the valuable asset that was easier to keep in place than move over to a new role.\u00a0 What was I to do.\u00a0 This asset needed an overhaul!<\/li>\n
- I talked to my manager, I visited with HR, I talked with my manager again, and was pleasantly surprised by what he had to say, and his willingness to make changes to remedy some of the issues I faced. But I still needed a change!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

- What I learned\n

- When I realized I was stuck\u2026I went back to step one in this article.\u00a0 Yes, I had to rethink through my blueprint.<\/li>\n
- I spoke up, asked for help.<\/li>\n
- I took suggestions, incorporating what was applicable (use good sense). I made changes and compromises, all the while keeping my compass pointed to my true north.<\/li>\n
- I joined Oil & Gas Admins International in June 2014.\u00a0 Best move ever!\n
- \n
- Working with industry peers allowed me to renew appreciation for\u00a0my employer<\/li>\n
- Networking helped me look at and manage the negative feelings of being\u00a0\u201cblocked in\u201d<\/li>\n
- Using newly acquired soft skills I turned\u00a0\u201cburnout\u201d into\u00a0\u201cre-ignite\u201d and turned the negative to a positive<\/li>\n
- I walk into the\u00a0\u201cnext chapter\u201d with frustrations behind me and knowing I and my abilities are highly valued.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Our success is\u00a0part of a\u00a0journey; sometimes we hit gravel pits, washed out bridges, and fog that freezes us in place. When we keep in mind that the present situation is only a leg in the\u00a0journey, and that the gauge of our success is the arrival at our final destination, we are compelled to\u00a0focus on the positive, look for possibilities, and keep moving forward.\u00a0 Whether it\u2019s a hop, skip, tiptoe or crawl; just keep moving forward.\u00a0 Don\u2019t shy away from the tough times, use your networks, use your resources, use every opportunity.\u00a0 Each success in your career gives you the courage and faith to move to the next success.<\/p>\n
